12/38 S'Pore$700

A palm tree silhouetted against a cloudy, sepia-toned sky. The title is a reference to a notation made on an old photograph found in a Tokyo flea market. It is apparently a reference to 1938 Singapore, which was at the time under Japanese occupation. This is a painting of tropical tranquility that is the calm before the storm.

A bird launches off a telephone wire, blurring against the dark sky in a Tokyo suburb. This series explores the simplicty of form created by certain lighting situations. Looking up creates a sense of reflection, of stopping to look at the world around us.

Kanashii Hana$450
Date: 02/07/2004
This painting casts the dark bark of the plum tree against a gloomy sky, which no matter how dark, still creates a silouette effect. Yet the pink and white flowers glow, creating a surreal effect. The use of subdued colors veering close to monochromatic suggests nostalgia.
"Kanashii hana" means "sad flowers" in Japanese, and is taken from an old song.

Four canvases together frame a view of a bright blue sky through the trees, as if looking through a window. The silhouette effect of crisp, dark leaves and branches against a smooth, distant blue sky achieves the illusion of realism. This is in tension with the painterly treatment of the trees, with energetic brush strokes.
